CP Foods launches new sustainability initiative

Goal is for Thailand to have first model city for achieving Net-Zero greenhouse gas emissions.

In a forward-looking initiative, Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods) and its joint venture, CP-Meiji, are championing sustainability through the Saraburi Sandbox Project. With the goal of advancing Saraburi toward becoming Thailand’s first model city for achieving Net-Zero greenhouse gas emissions, the project integrates innovative green practices across industrial, agricultural and community sectors.

Driving Net-Zero Innovations in Food Production

Presiding over the Saraburi Sandbox, Governor Buncha Chaowarin explored CP Foods’ showcase of sustainable approaches, including:

  • Renewable Energy Utilization: Deployment of biomass, bioenergy and solar technologies to power operations
  • Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi): CP Foods, the world’s first food producer with SBTi-approved short- and long-term goals, remains committed to achieving Net-Zero emissions across its value chain by 2050
  • Innovative Food Development: Creation of food products that promote both physical and mental health while minimizing environmental impact

CP-Meiji’s "Separating Bottles--Reducing Waste" Initiative

As part of the Saraburi Sandbox, CP-Meiji launched a community-driven waste management project that:

  • Educates students, teachers and residents about sorting and recycling waste to reduce contamination and incineration
  • Engages over 5,000 households, contributing to the sorting of at least one million items for recycling
  • Generates income from waste sales and plans to establish 10 waste bank projects by 2025, enhancing urban sustainability and reducing emissions

Eco-Friendly Practices at CP Foods’ Facilities

CP Foods' operations in Saraburi are focused on becoming Low Carbon Factories, with initiatives including:

  • Installation of solar cells and transition to 100% LED lighting
  • Development of carbon-footprint-labeled animal feed products
  • Solar Floating Cells at chicken processing plants, promoting energy efficiency and water conservation

A Model for Sustainable Growth

The Saraburi Sandbox Project exemplifies CP Foods’ and CP-Meiji’s commitment to fostering a green industrial ecosystem through innovative technologies, education and collaboration. By integrating sustainability at every level, the project aims to position Saraburi as a pioneering Net-Zero city and inspire similar initiatives worldwide.
