Bühler has acquired puffing technology from Swiss manufacturer CEREX, marking a significant expansion of its capabilities in pet food, food and feed production. The innovative technology uses heat and pressure to expand raw materials.

“The puffing process is a game-changer in how we approach cereal and snack production, offering a broad range of recipe possibilities,” said Christoph Vogel, Head of Business Unit Human Nutrition at Bühler. “The integration of this technology into Bühler’s portfolio strengthens our ability to meet the evolving needs of our customers and fosters continued innovation in recipe development.”

Puffed products, popular for their light texture and enhanced digestibility, are increasingly in demand as consumers seek healthier and more sustainable snacks. The technology also offers production advantages, such as reducing sugar content, boosting nutritional value and improving shelf life.

Bühler's Cerex puffing technology is highly efficient, achieving over 95% yield while using 50% less energy compared to similar systems. This reduces waste and supports sustainability goals. Bühler plans to open an Application & Training Center in April 2025 at its Uzwil, Switzerland, headquarters, where customers can experiment with new recipes and processes using this technology.
