FDA urged to extend comment period on feed safety rules
The National Grain and Feed Association has urged the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to extend the comment periods on two sets of proposed rules issued by the agency to implement significant portions of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The NGFA did so, it said, because the agency still has not issued proposed regulations implementing the animal feed and pet food provisions of the law, whose requirements are expected to be closely linked and interrelated to the other two rulemakings for which the comment period extension was sought.

Nutreco cuts 2013 profit forecast
Nutreco has dropped its 2013 EBITA (earnings before interest, taxes and amortization) to €255 million from €262.1 million, after third-quarter animal nutrition results for the company came in down from 2012 numbers. Nutreco saw animal nutrition revenue drop by 7.1 percent, to €794.4 million, mainly due to lower volumes in compound feed and adverse foreign currency impact.

Falling feed prices bring pigs back to profitable
U.S. pig production is becoming profitable again as feed prices drop post-2012 drought, according to Purdue Extension agricultural economist Chris Hurt. "This year, the hog outlook is almost the opposite of what it was last year," said Hurt.

Peruvian government raises anchovy quota
The Peruvian government has increased the anchovy quota for the second fishing season starting in November, a move that has been welcomed by IFFO (the International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organisation), the international marine ingredients trade organization. According to the Peruvian Ministry of Production, the industrial anchovy fishing quota for the north-central fishing area will be 2.3 million metric tons for the November 2013 to January 2014 fishing season.

US soybean yield to drop for fourth year in a row
Continued dry weather in the Midwest will leave the U.S. soybean yield at 39 bushels per acre, 3.6 bushels per acre below the U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast and the indication of a fourth successive year of declining yields that began in 2009, according to Chicago-based broker Allendale. The broker has pegged the total harvest at 2.98 billion bushels - 275 million bushels below the USDA estimate, and a drop of some 240 million bushels year on year.

Corn, soybeans rally as hot weather threatens US crop yields
Corn rose the most in 14 months and soybean futures jumped the most since 2011 as hot, dry Midwest weather threatens U.S. crop yields, according to reports. Temperatures are expected to average as much as 14 degrees F above normal through the first week of September, with little rain in the Midwest.

Final 2013 Renewable Fuel Standard requires further action, says NCC
The National Chicken Council praised the Environmental Protection Agency for its willingness to adjust the Renewable Fuel Standard, but said the final standard for 2013 established on August 7 does not go far enough to truly help the poultry industry. National Chicken Council President Mike Brown added that further action from Congress to repeal the Renewable Fuel Standard is the best way to give poultry and livestock producers more market certainty for the feed grains that are also used in renewable fuels.
