In research, we often talk about biological optimum as the nutrient level that allows animals to achieve their maximum performance. Under controlled conditions, this concept works well. Animals are healthy, environmental variation is limited, and feed intake is relatively predictable. These experiments provide the foundation of modern nutrition and remain essential to our understanding of nutrient requirements.
