Soy-based fish feed helps promote sustainable marine fish aquaculture
Feed trial research results using soybeans in fish feed as an alternative to fishmeal and fish oil have attained a major goal for sustainable marine fish aquaculture — producing farmed marine fish with a wild fish in/farmed fish out ratio of less than 1:1 — according to the U.S. Soybean Export Council. The amount of fishmeal and fish oil from wild-caught sources used in farmed fish feed has been a concern for the long-term sustainability and scalability of aquaculture.

Why invest in the poultry industry?
Investment, when properly applied, creates wealth, and this wealth can facilitate further investment. What happens when there is a failure to invest?

Wenger Manufacturing aquafeed extrusion system
Wenger Manufacturing
Wenger Manufacturing's aquafeed extrusion system is designed for high-capacity, small-diameter aquafeed production. The company says the extrusion system can increase production rates by three to five times for small-diameter aquafeeds, particularly shrimp feeds.

Increasing protein in grain-based fish meal
Grain-based aquaculture diets, while good, have some clear disadvantages. However, some researchers think that separating compounds may be a way to get around those disadvantages.

Optimizing available hay resources
With hay selling for vastly inflated prices this year, ranchers are looking more closely at getting cows to eat more and waste less. New and improved hay feeder and bunk designs can help maximize on-hand stocks of hay to last through the winter. However, it appears that the best solution for maximizing hay stocks may be simply good management.

Is technology good for hen welfare?
I left the Executive Conference on the Future of the American Egg Industry, which was held in conjunction with the International Poultry Expo in Atlanta, with more questions than answers. If the U.S. egg industry transitions from conventional cages to enriched colony housing, is it preserving the right to employ technology to continue to increase egg production while minimizing inputs?

IPE/IFE to remain in Atlanta through 2016
The combined International Poultry Expo/International Feed Expo/American Meat Institute show will remain in Atlanta, Ga., through at least 2016, and its location after that will depend entirely on where exhibitors and attendees want to see the show located, according to the heads of the three associations that are co-locating their shows. Rumors that the show will be moving back and forth between Atlanta and Chicago are only show-floor rumors, and any decisions such as that are years in the future, they said at a press conference on January 26.

Algae may provide protein in poultry, pig feed
Marine algae may serve as a viable protein-rich supplement to animal feed for poultry and pigs, according to researchers at Cornell University who are studying the material as a possible additive or replacement for corn and soybean meal. The goal is to transform a biofuel byproduct into a commodity, which could free up thousands of acres of cropland, say the researchers.

Looking forward and looking back in the poultry industry
Reflection is good sometimes as 2012 sees Poultry International celebrate its 50th anniversary. We’ve been following developments and making the odd prediction too, and later in the year, we will be looking in more detail at how the industry has developed since the magazine was first launched.
