Ractopamine safe for use in Brazil pork

Animal scientists in Brazil have found that a small dose of the feed additive ractopamine can boost pork production without changing how pork looks or tastes. In the latest issue of the Journal of Animal Science, researchers said that a 5 mg/kg dose of ractopamine increased muscle mass and feed efficiency, and had no noticeable effect on pork marbling, fat content, toughness or color.

A recent University of Delaware study of early lactation dairy cows revealed improved immune response when treated with Novus International Inc.'s Mintrex chelated trace minerals. Cows fed Mintrex were able to generate an elevated antibody response to a pathogen, which better enabled them to fight infection, according to the study, which was published in the August edition of Journal of Dairy Science.

DuPont reports drop in quarterly earnings

Betaine, often confused as a vitamin, is neither a vitamin nor even an essential nutrient; although under certain conditions dietary fortification with betaine may offer substantial benefits. A meta-analysis of the effects of dietary betaine supplementation on pig performance and carcass characteristics, including 19 studies, indicated that betaine did not significantly affect growth rate, but it did improve significantly feed efficiency (2-8 percent) and carcass yield, while reducing backfat deposition (10-20 percent).

Cargill expands animal nutrition presence in South Africa

Cargill's animal nutrition business has announced an investment of approximately US$20 million in South Africa, where the company has gained a majority shareholding and assumed managerial control of NuTec Southern Africa, its existing joint venture with Astral Foods, an integrated Southern African poultry producer. As part of this investment, Cargill plans to build a new premix and base mix facility at NuTec's existing location in Pietermaritzburg, which will expand Cargill's animal nutrition capabilities in sub-Saharan Africa.
