US cattle feedlots facing negative margins on high costs
U.S. cattle feedlots are expecting slight losses in 2013 in the wake of high livestock feed costs, according to Michael Swanson, an agricultural economist at Wells Fargo & Co. The U.S. herd reached a 61-year low after the 2012 drought, the worst drought since the 1930s and one which sent corn prices to an all-time high.

US, Japan further open Japanese market to US beef
U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack have announced that the U.S. and Japan have agreed on new terms and conditions which pave the way for expanded exports of U.S. beef and beef products to Japan. Under these new terms, which enter into effect on February 1, Japan will now permit the import of beef from cattle less than 30 months of age, compared to the previous limit of 20 months, among other steps.

Optimizing available hay resources
With hay selling for vastly inflated prices this year, ranchers are looking more closely at getting cows to eat more and waste less. New and improved hay feeder and bunk designs can help maximize on-hand stocks of hay to last through the winter. However, it appears that the best solution for maximizing hay stocks may be simply good management.

Korean farmers hit with high feed prices
Korean farmers have recently been hit by rising animal feed prices, and a fall in beef cattle prices caused by an oversupply of homebred cows. The number of Korean beef cattle rose to 2.92 million in 2009 and has now reached 3.3 million, the result of a 2008 mad cow disease outbreak that caused consumers to turn to Korean beef, increasing the number of Korean livestock farmers involved in cattle breeding.

Distillers’ grains substituting for more corn, soybeans in feed
On average, between crop years 2006/2007 and 2010/2011, 1 metric ton of distillers' grains (DDGS) produced for animal feed by U.S. ethanol plants substituted for about 1.22 metric tons of corn and soybean meal combined, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These findings may result in a net increase in DDGS in animal feed, as over time the amount in beef cattle feed declines but the share in dairy cattle, swine and poultry feed increases, according to the report.
