APHIS moves up deadline on AI vaccine proposal comments
The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has moved up the deadline for submitting written comments on the proposal of a vaccination program to combat avian influenza (AI) because of the urgency of the outbreak.

China bird flu could curb demand for animal feed
There is concern that the spread of bird flu in China willhamper demand for animal feed, as livestock owners cut their herds due tofalling hog prices.Feed production fell in 2013 for the first time in almost adecade as an outbreak of H7N9 cut demand, and output this year may be flat from2013, according to a survey of four Chinese feed mills and three local analystsby Bloomberg News.

China experiences the ‘toughest years’ on record
China Feed Industry Association data have shown compound feeds accounting for almost 162 million metric tons of the total of 191 million metric tons of all feeds produced by Chinese feed mills in 2013. On association figures, this meant a 1.2 percent reduction in China's compound feed production, while total feed tonnage was down by 1.8 percent.

Positive forecasts for Latin American poultry, pork
Avian influenza hit Mexico's poultry industry again in 2013, and there were fears initially of a big downturn in the national production of meat and eggs so that feed requirements would also be lower. But national chicken and egg production actually rose for 2013 despite the episodes of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H7N3 between January and August, on data from Mexican poultry union UNA.

Alltech releases 2013 global feed survey numbers
Aidan Connolly, vice president of Alltech, released theresults of Alltech’s third annual global animal feed survey in a webinarJanuary 27. The survey found 963 million metric tons of feed was produced globallyin 2013, up 1 percent from 954 million the previous year.

Sales of poultry products in China may be showing some signs of recovery as fears over avian influenza H5N9 are calmed, and this is feeding through to improved sales of poultry feed. The change in consumer behavior could represent the beginning of the end of a difficult period for China's feed producers.
