Canadian Food Inspection Agency testing feed for PEDv contamination
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conductingtests to determine whether contaminated animal feed was a factor in spreadingthe Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv) in Canada, according to a report.The agency said testing has found the virus was present inplasma that originated in the U.S. and was obtained at the Ontario-basedthird-party manufacturer for Grand Valley Fortifiers, a livestock feed company.

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO)ingredient approval process, used by 49 states, has an unclear future with theU.S. Food and Drug Administration. Despite a 35-year cooperative relationship,the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) recently learned that FDA feelsspecifically “the AAFCO process ultimately falls short” and “the majority ofingredients that are included in the AAFCO ‘official publication’ are neitherapproved food additives nor are they generally recognized as safe (GRAS).”

Illinois jury awards $16M to families of workers killed in grain bin
An Illinois jury has awarded more than $16 million to thefamilies of two teenagers who died in a 2010 grain bin accident and a thirdworker who was trapped in the bin but survived.Alejandro Pacas, 19, and Wyatt Whitebread, 14, were killedafter they were sent into a Haasbach LLC grain bin to help keep the cornflowing, or “walk down the grain,” while the machinery was running.
