AFIA joins coalition to push for federal GMO labeling solution
The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has announced itsmembership in the newly formed Coalition for Safe Affordable Food (CFSAF), joininga national effort to urge Congress to quickly seek a federal solution and establishstandards for the safety and labeling of animal feed, pet food and human food andbeverage products made with genetically modified ingredients.“AFIA firmly believes there should be a federal GMO labelingsolution protecting consumers by ensuring the safety of both food and feed ingredientsproduced through the use of modern agricultural biotechnology,” said Leah Wilkinson,AFIA director of ingredients, pet food and state affairs.

The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) submitted extensivestatements recently to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in response totwo proposed rules issued to implement provisions of the Food Safety ModernizationAct (FSMA).The first FDA proposal would require importers to verify thesafety of foreign foods and feed/feed ingredients imported and intended for usein the United States, while the second would establish criteria under which theagency would recognize and accredit third-party auditors that perform safety auditsfor such products.

Critical issues discussed at International Feed Regulators Meeting
The 7th Annual InternationalFeed Regulators Meeting (IFRM) organized by the International Feed Industry Federation(IFIF) in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations(FAO) brought together feed industry representatives and government officials fromaround the world together with IFIF and the FAO to discuss critical issues facingthe feed sector.“The 7th IFRM proved an important opportunity forglobal industry and feed regulators to discuss key issues for the feed and foodchain, such as capacity development for feed safety to implement the Codex requirements,”said Mario Sergio Cutait, IFIF chairman.

AFIA files comments on Food Safety Modernization Act
The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has filedtwo sets of comments to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)pertaining to the Food Safety Modernization Act. The comments addressed AFIA'sconcerns with the proposed rules on the foreign supplier verification programsand third-party auditor/certification bodies and provide the agency withsuggestions for modifying the rules with the feed industry in mind.

FDA makes FSMA deadline extension official
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on January 31 officiallyextended the comment period deadline on the proposed animal food rule under theFood Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).Animalfeed and pet food industry trade associations previously had been made aware ofFDA's intent to do so, but welcomed the announcement of the extension in the FederalRegister.

Animal feed plant explosion kills two, injures 10 in Omaha, Neb.
An explosion at animal feed plant in Omaha, Neb., has killed two people and injured at least 10 others, according to reports. The explosion and fire flattened part of the plant owned by International Nutrition, while about 38 employees were working in the mid-morning on January 20.

AFIA begins drafting comments on FSMA animal food rule
The American Feed Industry Association’s (AFIA) Food Safety Modernization Act Working Groups on Hazard Identification/Preventive Controls and Records/Registration met in Tampa on January 16-17 to answer more than 40 questions posed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in its proposed rules for Current Good Manufacturing Practices and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals — also known as the FSMA animal food rule.Eight sub-groups have been formed to focus on the following areas of concern: preventive controls; hazard analysis; good manufacturing practices; pet food; supplier selection; environmental testing/monitoring; end product testing; and records.

Global Food Safety Initiative recognizes scope extension for feed
The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) board of directors has announced that SQF has successfully added the scope of feed to the scopes for which they have already achieved recognition against the GFSI Guidance Document Sixth Edition.This is the first GFSI-recognized scheme to cover the scope of feed, which includes the production of animal feed and the processing of pet food products.
