Contaminated feed kills 70 rodeo horses

The feed was tainted with the ionophore monensin, which is deadly to horses.

The Beutler and Son Rodeo Co. has tragically lost nearly 70 horses due to contaminated feed. The incident, which occurred within the past two weeks, has been linked to a batch of feed containing monensin, an ionophore that is highly toxic to horses.

The feed was delivered by Livestock Nutrition Center (LNC) before August 23. LNC has since acknowledged that the feed contained monensin, which is safe for other livestock but deadly to horses. The company cited a failed cleanout procedure and a sensor malfunction as the causes of the contamination.

LNC emphasized that this was an isolated incident affecting only the single load delivered to Beutler and Son Rodeo Co. The company is working closely with the Oklahoma and Kansas State Departments of Agriculture, as well as the FDA, to investigate the issue and prevent future occurrences.

"We are committed to supporting the Beutler family and making this right," LNC stated. "Our customers and employees expect and deserve nothing less."
