Merger of rendering companies expected to be finalized October 28
Darling International expects to close on the purchase of Rothsay, the rendering and biodiesel division of Maple Leaf Foods, on October 28, subject to satisfaction of any remaining conditions. The Competition Act condition required to proceed with the purchase was announced on October 3, clearing the way for the transaction to close.

Taiwan Feed Industry Association to buy $1.83 million worth of US corn
The Taiwan Feed Industry Association expressed its intent to purchase nearly $1.83 billion of corn and corn co-products from the U.S. in 2014 and 2015 as part of an agreement to foster mutual trade relations between the State of Michigan and Taiwan. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development hosted the Agriculture Trade Goodwill Mission from Taiwan Sept. 16 in Lansing.

Survey finds dry UK harvest delivering good quality
Dry conditions at harvest have resulted in some of the highest Hagbergs recorded in the past few years in the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board/Home Grown Cereals Authority (AHDB/HGCA) Cereal Quality Survey estimates released September 9.Overall, Great Britain wheat quality analyzed so far by AHDB/HGCA, from 17,720 samples collected up to August 30, shows large improvements on the 2012 crop, with average Hagbergs of 334 seconds and an average specific weight of 77.8 kilograms per hectoliter.

US corn, soybeans hurt by resurgence of drought
A resurgence of drought in the Midwest and the lower Mississippi Valley is hurting the 2013 corn and soybean crops. With a growing percentage of U.S. corn and soybeans being rated as fair, poor or very poor because of the drought, feed supplies look to fall short of earlier expectations.

Weaning calves early has benefits during drought, says USDA
Weaning calves early when severe weather conditions such as drought affect cattle production has its benefits, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture studies. Working with local ranchers, Montana State University scientists and American Simmental Association collaborators in Bozeman, Mont., animal scientist Richard Waterman at the Agricultural Research Service Fort Keogh Livestock and Range Research Laboratory (LARRL) evaluated the early weaning of beef calves and its impact on cow, heifer and steer performance.
