Volunteer soybeans put 2013 corn crop at risk of pests, diseases
One of the biggest threats to the emerging 2013 corn crop in Nebraska and South Dakota is the presence of volunteer soybeans, according to Chip Flory, ProFarmer editor and crop analyst. Flory shared that observation on August 27 during the Grain & Meat Outlook Webinar, hosted by WATT Global Media and Farm Journal.

Merck suspends Zilmax sales after Tyson poses animal safety concerns
Merck Animal Health has temporarily suspended the sale of animal growthsupplement Zilmax in the United States and Canada, the company announced onAugust 16. The decision comes one week after Tyson Foods stopped buying Zilmax becauseit suspected a link between Zilmax and cattle at Tyson facilities withdifficulty walking.

USDA lowers corn production, corn yield forecasts for 2013
The outlook for U.S. corn production in 2013 was reduced in August, largely based on anticipated lower corn yields. The USDA on August 11 released its World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, which forecast the United States corn crop at 13.8 billion bushels.

Kansas State University's International Grains Program offers its feed manufacturing course to individuals in the feed industry. The course is targeted for maintenance personnel and managers of livestock, poultry, swine and agriculture facilities, as well as mill owners, managers, supervisors, merchandisers and equipment manufacturers.

US Grains Council elects Iowa corn, soybean producer as chairman
Julius Schaaf was elected chairman of the U.S. Grains Council during the council's 53rd annual board of delegates meeting in Ottawa, Canada, and elected a new slate for its board of directors.Schaaf is a fifth generation farmer from Randolph, Iowa, with more than 33 years of experience in production agriculture. He farms a corn, soybean rotation.

National Chicken Council vice president testifies on Renewable Fuel Standard
National Chicken Council Senior Vice President and Chief Economist Bill Roenigk told the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy and Power that the Renewable Fuel Standard, at least for conventional biofuels, is broken beyond repair, and that it is imperative at this time for Congress to take a critical look at the Renewable Fuel Standard. Roenigk appeared before the subcommittee on July 24.

Survey finds decrease in UK cereals, oilseed harvest area
The total cereals and oilseeds harvest area in Great Britain fell to 3.68 million acres, a 4 percent decrease from 2012, according to the 2013 Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board/Home Grown Cereals Authority Planting and Variety Survey published July 22. The survey is based on responses from 3,473 growers for May, June and July 2013.

FDA issues compliance guide for Salmonella in animal feeds, pet food
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has released a new Compliance Policy Guide (CPG) for its field staff on actions they intend to take when finding Salmonella contamination in food for animals. Under this new guide, the FDA will be able to target its resources more effectively to protect the health of both animals and humans, according to the agency.

Much of the work in the feed industry focuses around the mixture of ingredients - many of which are powders. Each powder has different physical properties, such as particle size, that pose unique challenges. A compromise needs to be found between plant productivity, cost, the homogeneity of the mix with feed, environmental and worker safety.

Closed ethanol plant in Indiana to resume operation under new ownership
An ethanol plant in South Bend, Ind., is on its way to resuming ethanol production after being shut down in November 2012. Connecticut-based Noble Americas Corp. purchased the former New Energy Corp. plant during a bankruptcy auction in January and expects to restart ethanol production by early 2014.

Ardent Mills to establish headquarters in Denver
ConAgra Foods, Cargill and CHS have announced that their proposed new joint venture flour milling company, Ardent Mills, will establish its headquarters in the Denver metropolitan area, contingent upon final application and approval of state and local incentives. The transaction is expected to be completed in late calendar year 2013, following regulatory clearances, financing and the satisfaction of customary closing conditions.
