Feed companies find success in difficult times
Coping with commodity prices is by far the largest hurdle that feed producers are facing at the close of 2012, no matter where they are located. However, throughout the world a number of feed companies are choosing to look beyond current drought conditions and are using the time to expand operations through mergers, capital expenditures and other initiatives.

Cargill grain elevator doubles storage capacity in Tennessee
A Cargill AgHorizons grain elevator project in Hales Point, Tenn., will significantly increase storage capacity, improve grain-unloading speed, save critical time and reduce transportation expenses. The project, completed by KBD Group, will allow Cargill to double the amount of grain it can handle. The Cargill project includes one million bushels of working/storage space, new truck receiving systems, a new barge loading system and a new office building with the demolition of the existing access road and two existing buildings.

World corn harvest forecast increases 4.5 percent on US crop
World corn production is forecast to increase by 4.5 percent in the 2012–2013 crop year, up from April predictions, on a significant U.S. corn harvest, according to the International Grains Council. Global farmers will harvest 913 million metric tons of corn in the year through June 2013, up from 866.1 million metric tons a year earlier and 12.7 million metric tons over the International Grains Council's April 26 estimate.

Iowa corn processor sued over air pollution
Iowa corn processor Grain Processing Corp. is being sued by 11 residents of Muscatine, Iowa for air pollution. The class-action lawsuit claims, on behalf of 17,000 residents who live within three miles of the company's corn milling plant, that the plant spews harmful chemicals and particulate matter for miles as the wind blows, blanketing homes and cars with soot and causing metals in everything from swing sets to siding and air conditioning systems to corrode.

Van Aarsen closes on largest order in 63-year history
The Netherlands-based Van Aarsen has closed on the largest order in the company's 63-year history, to supply, build and start up a 90-tons-per-hour feed mill for Sweden-based Kalmar Lantmän. The mill, a €45 million investment, will increase Kalmar Lantmän's animal feed production to 270,000 tons per year.

Saskatchewan reviewing proposed takeover of grain handler Viterra
The Saskatchewan government is reviewing a $6.1-billion proposed acquisition of grain handler Viterra by Swiss company Glencore International, studying how the takeover will affect the province in terms of the farmers, farm inputs and the overall economy, according to reports. The review will also look at grain industry employment in Saskatchewan, competition within the western Canadian grain-handling system and Saskatchewan's strategic position in the international grain industry.

Annual feed convention to highlight ag policy, food/feed safety
The chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, top executives from the grain and rail industries, and the Food and Drug Administration’s top food and feed safety official will headline the program when the National Grain and Feed Association kicks off its 116th annual convention on March 18–20 in Charleston, S.C. During the three-day event, industry leaders also will focus on the aftermath of the MF Global Inc. bankruptcy, including initial policy recommendations from the National Grain and Feed Association’s MF Global Task Force on ways to enhance protection of customer funds.
