As the intensive animal production industry has mostly shifted to confinement facilities, access to soil (minerals) and vegetation (vitamins) has been eliminated as a source of nutrients. Thus, to cover needs of micro-nutrients, commercial premixes of vitamins and trace minerals (usually added at 1 to 3 kg/MT) are used in every diet formulated today for pigs and poultry.

The Specialty Feed Ingredients Sustainability (SFIS) ProjectConsortium, dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of livestockproduction through innovative specialty feed ingredients, has announced theresults of a yearlong study that confirms the role of Specialty FeedIngredients (SFIs) in reducing the environmental impact of livestockproduction.Launched by the International Feed Industry Federation(IFIF) and the E.U. Association of Specialty Feed Ingredients and theirMixtures (FEFANA) in 2013, the overall results of the study show that the useof SFIs in animal diets reduces the consumption of basic feed ingredients.

AAFCO to review feed ingredient definitions at upcoming meeting
The Association of American Feed Control Officials’ (AAFCO) Ingredient Definitions Committee (IDC) will hold a meeting to review the definitions of feed ingredients, published annually in the AAFCO “Official Publication.” The committee will meet Friday, January 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. during the AAFCO Midyear Meeting in New Orleans.
