US poultry industry shows improvements in antibiotic stewardship

Reducing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) requires a combination of interventions including improved antibiotic stewardship, which the U.S. poultry industry has demonstrated it has achieved in recent years.

“Reducing AMR requires a comprehensive approach that combines responsible antibiotic use with preventative health strategies, such as implementing robust systems to monitor and guide antibiotic usage,” David Nickell, vice president sustainability and business solutions at DSM-Firmenich Animal Nutrition and Health, told Feed Strategy. “Ensuring veterinary oversight, maintaining accurate records and following evidence-based protocols all help to prevent the misuse, and overuse, of antibiotics to reduce the risk of AMR.”
