Vietnam tightens up on banned substances in animal feed
A new joint program was recently signed in Hanoi to encourage 100,000 livestock farmers to commit to end the use of banned substances. In the spotlight are beta-agonists, including clenbuterol, salbutamol and ractopamine, fed to stimulate growth and make the animals lean.

EU antibiotic growth promoter ban not most costly regulation
The ban of antibiotic growth promoters in food producing poultry and livestock in the EU has resulted in a reduction in the total use of antibiotics in animal production in Europe, Dominique Chavette, international poultry market manager, Invivo USA, reported.

Late last week, the European Parliament announced that the use of existing antimicrobial drugs should be restricted, and new ones should be developed, in order to fight the growing resistance of bacteria to today’s antibiotics.

Cargill eliminates 20 percent of shared-class antibiotics
Cargill is eliminating 20 percent of shared-class antibiotics, those deemed important for human medicine and farm animals, from its four feed yards in Texas, Kansas and Colorado, and four additional feed yards operated by Friona Industries, which is a strategic business partner that supplies the company with cattle. The total number of cattle involved annually is approximately 1.2 million.

Novozymes has acquired Pacific Vet Group-USA Inc. (PVG) for an undisclosed amount. Based in Arkansas, PVG develops and produces probiotics for animals. The company has significant know-how in probiotic applications for poultry, strong development expertise, a pipeline for the poultry hatchery segment, and a smaller commercial product portfolio.
