The Olympics of poultry consumption in Latin America

Comparing chicken and egg consumption with athletic performance and medals does not seem to be an easy task.

The Olympic Games are a world showcase of performance, endurance and, why not, national pride. The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics saw participation from 10,500 athletes contending in 329 competitions in 32 sports.

My colleague and friend Leonardo Moreno, head of communications at the National Poultry Producers Federation of Colombia (Fenavi), had the wonderful idea of comparing the top Olympic medalists (by country) with consumption of chicken and eggs. So, we went to carry out this pleasant comparison.

Chicken And Egg Consumption Of The Top 10 Countries In Latin America For The 33rd Summer Olympic Games

I will focus on the top five in Latin America.

Brazil, the second largest chicken producer in the world with 14% market share, was at the top of the region with 20 medals. Brazilians consume 45.10 kg of chicken per capita and 242 eggs.

Cuba was the second in the region, with eight medals. Unfortunately, I could only find data for egg consumption of barely 152 eggs per capita.

The next country is Ecuador, with five medals, a consumption of 27.31 kg of chicken and 204 eggs per capita.

Then comes Argentina with three medals, 49.3 kg of chicken and the outstanding number of 336 eggs per person.

The fifth position was for Chile, with two medals, 32.2 kg of chicken and 217 eggs per capita.

Chicken And Egg Consumption

Apart from Cuba, all have very good per capita consumption. However, it is not easy to compare the consumption of poultry products with the Olympic medal table. In general, Latin America did not excel in these games. For instance, in the region, Panama is the largest chicken consumer with 54 kg per capita and Mexico is the largest per capita egg consumer with 392 eggs, but both were far behind in medals.

Maybe a much deeper analysis is needed. Would you venture to find some relationship? Let everyone make their own conjectures and conclusions!

What do you think?
