Terrain announces new leadership

John Newton brings over 20 years of industry experience to his new executive position.

John Newton, Ph.D., has been appointed as the new executive head of Terrain, a leading team of ag economists and analysts. Terrain serves customers of AgCountry Farm Credit Services, American AgCredit, Farm Credit Services of America, and Frontier Farm Credit, providing expert insights on a wide range of agricultural sectors, including cattle, corn, wine, dairy, and tree nuts, as well as macroeconomic factors affecting rural America.

Tim Koch, executive vice president of business development for Farm Credit Services, highlighted the value Terrain brings to its customers, especially with Newton’s extensive expertise. His experience spans over 20 years, with notable roles as the Republican Chief Economist for the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry and chief economist at the American Farm Bureau Federation.

In 2021, Newton was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award from Ohio State University, reflecting his significant contributions to the field of agricultural economics. His data-driven, accessible analysis has made him a respected figure in the industry.

Newton will succeed Don Close, who oversaw Terrain’s launch in November 2022. Close will continue to focus on his work as a cattle and beef analyst. Terrain continues to deliver timely and relevant economic perspectives, with its latest insights covering topics such as beef consumer demand, the impact of reduced traffic at West Coast wineries, and potential pitfalls in federal milk marketing reform.
