Interstate Commodities Inc., an agribusiness company that has an office in Omaha, Neb., has purchased Cargill's grain elevator in Lincoln at 3001 Cornhusker Highway. Terms were not disclosed.

US corn and soybean acreages not final, says economist
Conflicting reports of U.S. planted corn and soybean acreage, even as the current harvest is underway, have left room for the fluctuation of the final number, according to University of Illinois Agricultural Economist Darrel Good. "For corn, acreage that had been reported to FSA (the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency) as planted totaled 91.428 million, 2.657 million more than reported the previous month," said Good.

US corn, soybean production uncertainty expected to continue
U.S. corn and soybean prices are likely to continue to be unsettled as harvest reports become more numerous and the market forms expectations about the October production forecasts, according to University of Illinois agricultural economist Darrel Good. "In each of the previous three years, when the U.S. average corn yield was below trend value, the October production forecast was below the September forecast," said Good.

One of the biggest threats to the emerging 2013 corn crop in Nebraska and South Dakota is the presence of volunteer soybeans, according to Chip Flory, ProFarmer editor and crop analyst. Corn rose the most in 14 months and soybean futures jumped the most since 2011 as hot, dry Midwest weather threatens U.S. crop yields, according to reports. Temperatures are expected to average as much as 14 degrees F above normal through the first week of September, with little rain in the Midwest.

Crop tour results in lowered forecasts for corn and soybean yields
Chip Flory, editor, Pro Farmer, and crop analyst, presented the results of Pro Farmer's 21st annual crop tour during the Pro Farmer/WATT Grain & Meat Outlook webinar. He said that as a result of late planting caused by wet spring weather in the Corn Belt, much of the corn and the soybean crops are at immature stages for late August and will require several weeks of good growing conditions to reach their respective yield potentials.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's August Crop Production report forecast smaller-than-expected U.S. corn and soybean crops for 2013. The corn crop forecast is at 13.763 billion bushels, 242 million bushels smaller than the average trade guess, and the soybean crop forecast sits at 3.255 billion bushels, 81 million bushels smaller than the average trade guess.

US Grains Council elects Iowa corn, soybean producer as chairman
Julius Schaaf was elected chairman of the U.S. Grains Council during the council's 53rd annual board of delegates meeting in Ottawa, Canada, and elected a new slate for its board of directors.Schaaf is a fifth generation farmer from Randolph, Iowa, with more than 33 years of experience in production agriculture. He farms a corn, soybean rotation.

The U.S. corn and soybean markets continue to reflect uncertainty about the potential size of the country's 2013 corn and soybean crops, according to reports. Since mid-June, December 2013 corn futures have traded in an 80 cents range, and November 2013 soybean futures have traded in a $1.00 range as production expectations shifted up and down.

Black Sea origin corn is selling at a discount of $23 per metric ton to feed wheat in East Asia, prompting buyers to substitute wheat with corn, according to trading executives and feedmillers. The upcoming corn harvest in Brazil, the recently completed corn plantings in the U.S. and rising corn production in Ukraine are all expected to push up global corn production to a record high and drag down prices, they said.
