Despite slow corn planting, record crop in US still possible
Weather conditions have slowed the 2013 planting season, but the United States Department of Agriculture is still expecting a record corn harvest. According to the figures released June 12 in the agency's World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, the 2013 forecast calls for just more than 14 billion bushels havested.

US corn acreage may drop on wet weather
Wet weather in the U.S. Midwest through the beginning of June may lead to a decrease in corn acreage and cause a possible switch to soybeans, according to Joel Widenor, an agricultural meteorologist with Commodity Weather Group. Reductions are most likely in northeastern Iowa, southeastern Minnesota, central North Dakota and western Wisconsin.

Production of corn, soybeans projected to increase in 2014
Corn and soybean production both in the U.S. and worldwide are expected to increase in 2014, as the U.S. Department of Agriculture has offered its first look into the year ahead. The projections, released in the USDA's World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, show a bright spot for livestock and poultry producers, who rely on the grain supply for feed.

South Africa lowers corn output estimate
South Africa will likely lower its estimated corn output by 2.5. percent from March numbers, according to the country's latest survey, while keeping its wheat numbers unchanged. Farmers may harvest 11.5 million metric tons of corn, according to a median estimate, compared to the 11.8 million metric ton prediction made in March.

US corn, soy planting estimates up
U.S. corn and soybean planting estimates are up from previous forecasts, according to an Allendale Inc. survey, and wheat plantings will increase for the third consecutive year. The corn forecast is now at 96.956 million acres, down from 2012’s 97.155 million acres and above the 96.5 million that the U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast on February 22.

Ukraine's wheat and corn inventories are down from 2012 numbers, according to the country's Agriculture Ministry, with wheat at 6.5 million metric tons and corn at 9.5 million metric tons as of early March. Current wheat numbers are compared to 8.1 million metric tons as of March 1, 2012, according to government statistics.

Animal feed costs could drop as grain prices forecast lower
Poultry and livestock producers should see some relief from high animal feed costs, as the price of corn, soybeans, wheat and sorghum have all been forecast lower, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, released on March 8. Corn prices are projected 20 cents a bushel lower, with a range of $6.75 to $7.45.

US corn, soybean prices may drop in 2013
U.S. corn and soybean prices may drop significantly in 2013 due to normalizing weather conditions, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture Chief Economist Joe Glauber, who spoke at the annual Agricultural Outlook Conference in Arlington, Va., the week of February 18. According to Glauber, corn prices in 2013 will average $4.80 per bushel, down 33 percent, and soybean prices will fall to $10.50 per bushel, down 27 percent.

Soybean prices rose sharply after Argentina didn't get rains that had been forecast over the weekend, according to reports. March soybeans rose 45.75 cents to $14.7025 per bushel as markets reopened after the U.S. Presidents Day holiday on February 18.

The U.S. drought that began in the summer of 2012 and ruined corn and soybean crops may continue at least through the 2013 spring planting season, preventing a much-needed recovery, according to analysts. The Palmer drought index, which tracks rain and temperatures to gauge the extent of drought conditions, fell to minus 4 in July 2012, said Bryce Anderson, an agricultural meteorologist at DTN.
