Shrimp industry makes advancements in battle against Early Mortality Syndrome
Last month researchers at the University of Arizona had breakthrough in the mystery of the Early Mortality Syndrome, a disease which has resulted in massive losses in shrimp farming. A specific blend of 1-monoglycerides has been developed to fight both the viral and bacterial causative agents. Recently, the team successfully produced the first EMS-free cycle on an EMS-infected farms.

De Heus launches phase two of Vietnam aqua feed factory
De Heus is opening the US$8 million expansion of its aqua feed factory in Vinh Long, Vietnam, which will increase the factory's capacity from 30,000 tons a year to 100,000 tons a year and help strengthen the company's position in the aqua feed market. The upgrade will serve the growing aquaculture market in the Mekong Delta and produce feeds for pangasius, tilapia, snake head fish and fingerling, according to De Heus.

IFFO supports Europe ban on healthy fish discards
IFFO The Marine Ingredients Organisation has claimed its support for the European Parliament's vote to ban discards of healthy fish, saying that the raw materials can instead be used to supply the needs of the fishmeal and fish oil industries. "The supply of fishmeal and fish oil is not meeting current demand," said Andrew Mallison, director general of IFFO.

Soy-based fish feed helps promote sustainable marine fish aquaculture
Feed trial research results using soybeans in fish feed as an alternative to fishmeal and fish oil have attained a major goal for sustainable marine fish aquaculture — producing farmed marine fish with a wild fish in/farmed fish out ratio of less than 1:1 — according to the U.S. Soybean Export Council. The amount of fishmeal and fish oil from wild-caught sources used in farmed fish feed has been a concern for the long-term sustainability and scalability of aquaculture.

The Improvers' Program will assist fishmeal and fish oil factories that fall short of compliance with the existing responsible supply standard for fish stock management and/or food safety and traceability in their factories.

Fish feeds boost Nutreco earnings
Netherlands headquarters of international animal nutrition group Nutreco has reported revenues of €2.573 billion for the first half of 2011, up by 14.3% from the equivalent six months of 2010. Total earnings before exceptional items and amortization were 2.4% higher at €114.7 million, of which animal nutrition contributed €54.6 million (down by 11.2%) and fish feed gave €35.3 million (up by 71.4%).

Auburn University’s Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures developed an online, multilingual training and certification program for working industry professionals.
