Bell Aquaculture to open feed mill in Indiana
Bell Aquaculture plans to open a feed mill to supply feed forthe local and national aquaculture industry. The new mill, located at Bell Farmsin Albany, Indiana, will be the first of its kind to locally produce feed to servicethe aquaculture industry on a mass scale using local Indiana ingredients.

Aquafeeds suffer a loss of volume in 2013
Aquaculture's growth in recent years has provided one of the brightest stars in the compound feeds firmament, but its record in 2013 was rather less impressive. Asia had problems with shrimp disease as well as with reducing fish volumes of both pangasius and tilapia. Declining markets for salmonid feeds were seen in the key sectors of Norway, Chile and Canada. Smaller aquafeed sectors, such as in Australia, similarly reported reduced volumes.

Will Europe change its aquafeed protein after EU feather meal decision?
Poultry groups will be watching with interest how feed businesses in Europe respond to the European Union’s decision that feather meal can be used in feeds for fish. Until now, a ban on using any type of so-called processed animal protein has been in place since 2000, triggered by the “Mad Cow Disease” crisis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy that was deemed to be transmissible through in-feed materials of animal origin.

Aquaculture groups release common requirements for fishmeal sourcing
The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) and GlobalG.A.P. have announced the creation of common requirements for the sourcing offishmeal and fish oil for farmed fish diets. This move to harmonize feed requirements between certification schemes is another step in helping aquaculture buyers seek responsibly sourced products, according to IFFO (the International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organization).

Anitox appoints commercial director for Europe, Middle East, Africa
Pieter Wolleswinkel has joined Anitox, a provider of antimicrobial solutions for the animal and aqua feed, pet food and fermentation sectors, as commercial director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In his new role, Wolleswinkel will have full responsibility for the company’s commercial and technical service teams in these regions.

Novus Global Aquaculture Innovation Award presented at GOAL 2013
Novus announced that Dr. Amir Sagi, Ph.D., a professor at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, is the recipient of the 2013 Novus Global Aquaculture Innovation Award. In association with the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA), this inaugural award, sponsored by Novus, was presented today during the GOAL 2013 conference held in Paris, France.

American Soybean Association requests meeting to discuss aquaculture
American Soybean Association President Danny Murphy has written to Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, requesting a joint meeting to discuss U.S. aquaculture. "…we are aligned with the Administration's view that the U.S. aquaculture industry has the potential to supply our domestic seafood needs as well as the growing global demand," the letter reads.

Back in 2001, fish meal was about $480 per metric ton. This year it has exceeded $2,000 and there is absolutely no indication it will ever get any cheaper anytime soon.

Opportunity in Egypt's aquaculture industry is driving the rapid expansion of the capacity of its extruded fish feed production. Recently, two major European players have significantly increase their Egyptian aquafeed investments, while at least two poultry-feed companies with headquarters in Egypt are described as being well ahead with plans to start their own fish feed production.

Nutreco acquires Ecuador shrimp, fish feed supplier
Nutreco has successfully completed its acquisition of 75 percent of the shares in Gisis S.A., the shrimp and fish feed subsidiary of the Expalsa group. The transaction has received unconditional clearance by the Ecuadorian competition authority, and takes Nutreco into the global top three shrimp feed suppliers.
