Six steps to remove plasma from piglet feeds
Whether or not porcine plasma contributes to the on-going spread of the porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus in piglets is still unclear. Yes, the PED virus has been detected in samples of plasma, but it is too early to conclude if this is enough to infect piglets eating diets manufactured with contaminated plasma.

U.S., Canadian pork, feed industries collaborate to study PED virus
More than 60 people representing the U.S. and Canadian pork, feed and other allied industries recently participated in a meeting on the porcineepidemic diarrhea (PED) virus hosted by the National Pork Board, and in collaborationwith the National Pork Producers Council, the American Association of Swine Veterinarians, the American Feed Industry Association, the National Grain and Feed Association, the National Renderers Association and the North American Spray Dried Blood andPlasma Producers, in Des Moines, Iowa. Although the disease does not affect humansor pork safety, it has infected and killed millions of young pigs on farms of allsizes in 27 states since May 2013 and in four Canadian provinces since January.

Breaking the link between feed, PED virus
From poultry to aqua feed, the figures presented in this issue's World Feed Panorama reflect a production year impacted by the complications of disease. Regardless of the region, these maladies increasingly know no borders.

No link found between blood plasma in feed, Canada PEDv cases
Scientific testing by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency(CFIA) cannot confirm a link between feed containing blood plasma and PorcineEpidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv) cases in Canada. As reported in February, the CFIA conducted abioassay study on U.S.-origin porcine blood plasma used in feed pelletsproduced by Grand Valley Fortifiers.

Soaring blood prices may plummet overnight
The U.S. is experiencing a reduction in market pigs due to the porcine epidemic diarrhea the PED virus. As pigs take about six months from birth to slaughter, and stocks of blood products destined for feed manufacturing (whole blood meal, animal blood plasma, and blood hemoglobin) take a few months to clear (or replenish), I find it reasonable for prices to be steadily increasing from now on.

A marked improvement in production economics for the American poultry sector and weather-related effects on the availability of pasture for grazing were among influences increasing the demand for feeds in the United States in 2013, as grain prices decreased. But, while the pork business stabilized, and the broiler, layer and dairy markets all showed a small annual increase, beef dropped sharply and is expected to continue its fall in 2014.

Canadian Food Inspection Agency testing feed for PEDv contamination
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conductingtests to determine whether contaminated animal feed was a factor in spreadingthe Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv) in Canada, according to a report. The agency said testing has found the virus was present inplasma that originated in the U.S. and was obtained at the Ontario-basedthird-party manufacturer for Grand Valley Fortifiers, a livestock feed company.

Protein quality in diets devoid of blood products
The ongoing crisis with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in the U.S. has brought several nutritionists against the dilemma of removing blood products from their piglet formulas. In my experiences, working with diets free or with minimal amounts of animal plasma (and any other blood products), the following ingredients appear to work effectively in keeping dietary protein digestibility at the highest possible levels.
