California's Proposition 37, which would have required manufacturers to label all foods with genetically modified ingredients, looked unlikely to pass on November 7, gaining just 45 percent of the state's votes while 55 percent opposed it, with more than 50 percent of precincts reporting. EU eases import restrictions on Japanese feed post-Fukushima

The EU has eased feed and food import restrictions on 11 Japanese prefectures originally placed in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear accident. Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Gunma, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Miyagi, Saitama, Tokyo, Iwate, Chiba and Kanagawa restrictions have been eased; however, the restrictions on imports coming from the Fukushima prefecture will remain until March 31, 2014.

Study insufficient to question safety of genetically modified corn

A recent study that called into question the safety of Monsanto's NK603 genetically modified corn did not provide sufficient evidence to reconsider existing safety approvals, according to France's government. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Caen, said rats that fed on the corn were at higher risk of suffering tumors, organ damage and premature death.

South Africa group calls for Monsanto modified corn ban

Monsanto Co.'s genetically modified NK603 corn is hazardous to the health and should be banned, according to South Africa's African Centre for Biosafety. The centre has asked South African authorities to ban the corn's cultivation, import and export based on a French study that claims the corn can cause tumors, liver damage and kidney damage in laboratory rats.

Russia suspends import of genetically modified corn on safety concerns

Russia has suspended the import of Monsanto Co.'s genetically modified NK 603 corn after a French study raised concerns that the product might have adverse long-term effects on rats, according to reports. The suspension was requested by consumer watchdog Rospotrebnadzor, which asked scientists at Russia's Institute of Nutrition to review the study.

Nitrate a concern in drought-damaged corn fed to livestock

Drought-damaged corn plants, especially those heavily fertilized with nitrogen, can accumulate nitrate, making them dangerous for animals to consume, according to Tim Evans, an associate professor of veterinary pathobiology and toxicology section head at the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. In normal conditions, corn crops typically absorb nitrate into only the lower 12–18 inches of the stalk, which does not have to be fed to animals.

Israel's agriculture ministry's animal feed supervision bill, which aims to see tighter controls placed on animal feed and its related supply chain, has passed its first Knesset reading, according to reports. The new legislation would allow random testing of animal feed and the potential recall of feed or raw materials found to be harmful to animals or humans.
