FDA issues draft guidance on nanotechnology use in animal feed
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a draft guidance addressing the use of nanotechnology in food for animals. The draft guidance was released in conjunction with three final guidances on the use of nanotechnology: in foods, in cosmetics and an agency-wide guidance outlining overarching considerations for all FDA-regulated products.

Feed the Future Innovation Lab receives $39,050 award from USDA
The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for the Reduction of Post-Harvest Loss (PHL) at Kansas State University recently received a two-year, $39,050 award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Scientific Cooperation Research Program (USDA-SCRP) titled “From the ‘Milpas‘ to the market: a feasibility study on the use of metal silos for safer and better storage of Guatemalan native corn.”

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) announced registration is open for two additional Food Safety Modernization Act Regional Seminars: "Phase 1: Building a Foundation for Compliance." The meetings will be hosted in Des Moines, Iowa, and Atlanta on Aug. 11-12 and Aug. 14-15, respectively.

AFIA requests animal food exemption in FSMA food registry
The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) filed comments June 6 with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting an exemption of animal food from provisions made to the Reportable Food Registry provisions of the Federal Food Drug & Cosmetic Act as amended by the Food Safety Modernization Act.AFIA -- the world's largest organization dedicated exclusively to representing the business, legislative and regulatory interests of the U.S. animal feed industry and its suppliers -- explained in the comments that "the statutory language does not mention 'animal food,' it addresses notification to 'consumers' and requires that notifications be published in 'grocery stores' only."

AFIA to host FSMA regional seminars
To enable the industry to better understand the largest set of rules to impact feed and pet food since the 1950s, the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) will host Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) regional seminars across the United States during the next 18 months.The first Phase I meeting will kick off the series July 27-28, in Sacramento, California.

FDA extends comment period on sanitary transportation rule
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has extended by 60 days the public comment period on its sanitary transportation rule under the Food Safety Modernization Act.The FDA said it approved an extension to the comment period as a result of requests from several groups, including the National Grain and Feed Association and National Oilseed Processors Association.

Analysis shows mycotoxin levels rising in stored 2013 crop
After seven months of feeding the 2013 harvest to their herds, dairy producers may soon find their corn silage and total mixed ration (TMR) are not quite up to par, as many herds are now facing new challenges due to recent mold and mycotoxin growth in feed during storage.“The U.S. crops varied considerably from farm to farm and even from field to field. These varied crops were all harvested at the same time and placed into storage, creating silage that is a mixture of maturity and crop stress,” said Dr. Max Hawkins, a nutritionist from Alltech’s mycotoxin management team.
