Scottish pig producers hit with feed price increases
The modest improvement in Scottish pig prices in recent weeks has been overshadowed by a surge in feed prices, according to Stuart Ashworth, head of economic services with Quality Meat Scotland. The higher pig prices, up 1.25p/kg since the middle of June to 150.62p/kg the last full week of July, follow slightly tighter supplies as the volume of prime pigs reaching UK abattoirs decreased between May and June.

Poultry, meat organizations call for ethanol production mandate waiver
As U.S. drought conditions continue to be the worst in 56 years, and corn yield forecasts continue to drop significantly, a coalition of poultry and meat organizations have asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to waive the federal mandate for the production of corn ethanol. In a petition delivered to the agency, the coalition asked for a waiver “in whole or in substantial part” of the amount of renewable fuel that must be produced under the Renewable Fuels Standard for the remainder of 2012 and for the portion of 2013 that is one year from the time the waiver becomes effective.

International Egg Commission joins Food and Agriculture Organization for sustainability
The International Egg Commission has joined the new United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization-led partnership to improve how the environmental impacts of the livestock industry are measured and assessed. As the global consumption of meat, dairy products and eggs continues to rise, increasing attention must be paid to the livestock sector's environmental performance — such as the efficiency with which it uses scarce natural resources, its impact on water resources and how it contributes to climate change.

Pig feed price increases cause challenges for UK producers
The price of feed wheat, the most important component of pig feed in the UK, has risen by over £20 per metric ton since the beginning of June, presenting challenges for pig producers as their production costs rise, according to a report by the British Pig Executive. At the start of June, UK wheat futures for July delivery came in at £171 per metric ton.

Montana ranchers are in need of hay donations to feed their livestock to help offset the 300,000 acres destroyed in recent fires, according to reports. Calls have been sent out to the surrounding areas by disaster and emergency services, but responses have been sparse so far.

Codex Commission adopts global ractopamine standards
The Codex Alimentarius Commission has adopted global food safety standards for animal feed ingredient ractopamine hydrochloride, setting out an Acceptable Daily Intake and Maximum Residue Levels for pig and cattle muscle, fat, liver and kidney. Codex global food safety standards are designed to ensure that public health is protected and to facilitate the fair trade of safe food products by providing international food safety reference points for all countries, according to Codex.

Emergency Animal Feed Program established in Utah after wildfires
The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food has activated an Emergency Animal Feed Program in response to numerous requests received for assistance from livestock owners affected by the recent wildfires. In partnership with the Utah Emergency Animal Response Coalition, the department established the "Feed the Animals" account at Wells Fargo Bank to serve as a place where the public can make cash donations to be used for the purchasing of animal feed and other livestock needs.

European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation releases environmental report
The European Feed Manufacturers' Federation has released the second edition of its environmental report, expanding upon the initial overview of the environmental benefits and burdens that result from activities under the direct control of the EU compound feed industry, outlined in its 2009 report. “The European compound feed industry has to focus on the further increase of resource efficiency and its contribution to safe and healthy feed and food," said Ruud Tijssens, chairman of the federation's task force.

World corn harvest forecast increases 4.5 percent on US crop
World corn production is forecast to increase by 4.5 percent in the 2012–2013 crop year, up from April predictions, on a significant U.S. corn harvest, according to the International Grains Council. Global farmers will harvest 913 million metric tons of corn in the year through June 2013, up from 866.1 million metric tons a year earlier and 12.7 million metric tons over the International Grains Council's April 26 estimate.
