The inaugural Inspire: Non-starchPolysaccharide (NSP) Forum got underway March 31 with 80 delegates from 23countries hearing presentations aimed at generating a deeper understanding ofthe complex structures of plant NSPs and the factors that influence theirnutritional impact. It was the first of three sessions across the three days ofthe Inspire forum looking, respectively, at aspects of the NSP substrate, theimpact of fibre on animal nutrition and feed enzyme solutions to improveefficacy and sustainability.

Seminar focuses on feed mill maintenance process
At the recent 2014 Feed Mill Management Seminar inNashville, Tenn., Phil Sisler, feed mill manager with Perdue Farms, discussedthe evolution of the maintenance process throughout the years, from reactivemaintenance to integrated maintenance, and implored managers to find out wheretheir mill facilities may fall in that process. On one end of the spectrum, heexplained, is a complete lack of a PM program and on the other end ispredictive maintenance, which is ideal.

Feed life cycle guidelines released by international feed groups
Global feed life cycle assessment (LCA) guidelines, developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)'s Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance Partnership (LEAP) are now available for public review, the International Feed Industry Federation (IFIF) announced. LEAP aims to improve how the environmental impacts of the livestock industry are measured and assessed to reduce the impact of livestock products on the environment.

The Northern Crops Institute's Feed Processing Center prepares to undergo $800,000 feed mill modernization. The rehabbed mill will feature a new mixer, micro ingredient system and automated operating system. Much of the equipment was donated by the manufacturers to aid in pushing the institution's agenda to remain a leader in training global customers how to best utilize the region's crops in feed production.

Lower feed output by big EU players
The European Union grew larger in 2013 when Croatia became its 28th member. On preliminary estimates from the European Feed Manufacturers' Federation (FEFAC), the newly enlarged EU-28 produced a total of 153.8 million metric tons of compound feeds in 2013, fractionally less than the 154.2 million metric tons from the same 28 member states in 2012.
