NFU to challenge processed animal protein ban decision
A decision by the Food Standards Authority to advise the government not to lift a ban on the use of processed animal protein in non-ruminant feed will be challenged, according to the NFU. NFU President Peter Kendall has written to Agriculture Minister Jim Paice to raise a number of concerns over how board members reached their decision, including that the board did not discuss the rationale behind the proposal.

Increased phosphorus in soybeans may improve animal feed
Modifying soybean seeds to increase phosphorus content can improve animal nutrition and reduce feed costs and nutrient pollution, according to a recent study. In the study, one modified soybean variety had better seedling field emergence than the control, which had a normal phosphorus value.

China to ban antibiotics as growth promoters
China's Ministry of Agriculture has announced a forthcoming ban on antibiotics as growth promoters in animal feed. The ban is supported by the academic community, which believes that without antibiotics in animal feed, the health of animals will be better promoted, microbes' resistance to antibiotics will be lowered and food will become safer to eat.

Aquaculture feed producer EWOS is sponsoring an Improvers’ Program extension to the International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organisation’s Global Standard for Responsible Supply. The Improvers' Program will assist fishmeal and fish oil factories that fall short of compliance with the existing responsible supply standard for fish stock management and/or food safety and traceability in their factories.

Darling International sees second quarter net income growth
Darling International Inc., which makes protein meals that can be used as nutritional additives for the animal feed industry, reported a net income of $52.2 million for the second quarter of 2011 ended July 2, up from $11.4 million in 2010. For the same period in 2011, the company reported net sales of $470.6 million as compared to $166.2 million for the second quarter of 2010.

US ethanol producer uses wheat to battle corn shortage
U.S. ethanol producer The Andersons Inc. is mixing wheat into its corn-based biofuel in an effort to cut costs and diversify its supplier sources while fighting an increasing shortage in corn supplies. Andersons is mixing soft red winter wheat along with corn to produce the biofuel, according to Neill McKinstray, vice president and general manager of the company's ethanol division.

Adisseo animal nutrition to make initial public offering in Hong Kong, Paris
Bluestar Adisseo, an animal nutrition company and one of the largest producers of the poultry protein methionine, aims to raise around $1.5 billion in a Hong Kong-Paris dual initial public offering listing, according to reports. Adisseo plans to list itself on the markets in Hong Kong and Paris in September, with hopes of attracting European investors, reports say.

The Country Note contains conditions for the production of antibiotics-free animal feed as a supplementary (non-mandatory) certificate for all animal feed manufacturers that are already certified for GMP+ within the animal feed production scope, according to GMP+.

UK animal feed, pet food contributing to deforestation, says study
More than 10% of all palm kernel meal, a byproduct of palm oil, produced in the world is fed to British animals as feed or petfood, a statistic that may be contributing to deforestation, according to experts. The plantations on which most of the world’s oil palm is grown have resulted in an 85% loss of biodiversity, according to a study done for the Department of Food and Rural Affairs.
