Chicago Mercantile Exchange to halt delivery of cattle given feed additive Zilmax
The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) will no longer accept delivery of cattle fed the growth additive Zilmax, beginning with October deliveries on October 7, to conform with exchange guidelines for deliveries against CME live cattle futures, according to reports. "We are letting the market know these Zilmax cattle no longer are merchantable in our view from a contract specification perspective because they will not be accepted by a majority of our approved slaughterhouses," said CME Managing Director of Commodity Research and Product Development David Lehman.

EU may authorize first feed additives with mycotoxin counteracting properties
The EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health has positively voted on the authorization of two Biomin feed additives from the company's Mycofix product line as "substances for reduction of the contamination of feed by mycotoxins." The products, Mycofix Secure (bentonite/dioctahedral montmorillonite) and Biomin BBSH 797 (Gen. nov. sp. nov., formerly Eubacterium), are slated to become the first-ever products authorized by the EU as substances with proven mycotoxin-counteracting properties, according to Biomin.

FDA issues guidance for animal food additive petitions
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced the availability of a draft document describing the type of information it recommends that companies provide when they submit a food additive petition for substances intended for use in animal food. Under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, the FDA must approve food additives before they can be used in animal food.

Parent company considering sale of Lohmann Animal Health
PHW Group, Germany's biggest poultry breeder and owner of the Wiesenhof food brand, is considering a sale of its Lohmann Animal Health GmbH business, according to people familiar with the process. The family-owned company hired Commerzbank AG to manage a potential disposal of avian-vaccine and feed-additive maker Lohmann Animal Health, based in Cuxhaven, in the second half, according to reports.

New product safety requirements focus at annual feed, pet food conference
Feed, feed ingredient and pet food manufacturers will hear the latest on major new product safety requirements likely to be implemented by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) during the fourth annual Feed and Pet Food Joint Conference, scheduled for September 25-26 in Indianapolis, Ind. More than 300 industry members are expected to attend the event, hosted by the National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) and the Pet Food Institute (PFI) at the downtown JW Marriott Hotel.
