AB Agri researches insect-derived poultry, pig feed protein options
A project focusing on using insect-derived feed protein as a replacement for expensive soybean meal and fishmeal in poultry and pig diets is being spearheaded by the parent company of British poultry and pig compound feed manufacturer ABN, AB Agri. The project involves entomologists, biochemists and nutritionists, combining the expertise within ABN with that of scientists at the Food and Environment Research Agency.

Canada company researching antibiotics replacements in animal feed
Canadian biotechnology company Prairie Plant Systems Inc. is researching new technologies with the potential to replace antibiotics in animal feed, focusing on the health properties of plants such as mustard seeds, according to reports. The first step in the company's goal, said CEO Brent Zettl, is to develop feed supplements that will stimulate an animal's immune system to resist infection.

Fungus grown on ethanol leftovers could make good animal feed
A high-protein fungus grown in the leftovers of ethanol production could be dried and used as a substitute for corn or soybean meal in chicken and pig feed, according to researchers at Iowa State University. During the feeding trials, which focused on nursery chickens and pigs, researchers found that pig performance wasn’t impacted when dried fungi were substituted for corn or soybean meal, said Nicholas Gabler, an assistant professor of animal science.

Uganda's Makerere University has created an animal feed that increases milk production in dairy cattle by 30 percent consistent intake, according to reports. The milk booster feed was developed from research funded by the World Bank Millennium Science Initiative through the government of Uganda and coordinated by the National Council for Higher Education.

US government reviewing ethanol policy in wake of calls for changes
The U.S. government is reviewing the country's ethanol policy in the wake of numerous calls for a suspension of the existing mandate due to the continued drought, which has lowered predicted corn yields and raised prices. Ethanol production was 817,000 barrels a day the week of Aug. 5, down 15 percent from a record in December 2011.

Dutch seize illegal antibiotics used in animal feed
Dutch authorities seized 1,000 kilograms (2,205 pounds) of virginiamycin, an antibiotic that has been banned for use in animal feed by the European Union and was likely meant to be added as a growth promoter, according to the Netherlands' food safety authority. The cargo was found during a search of a transhipment company in the southern Netherlands.

China drops antidumping investigation against US distillers grains
China has decided to drop its antidumping investigation against imports of U.S. distillers dried grains with solubles, DDGS, according to the Asian country's Ministry of Commerce. The investigation was launched in December 2010 at the request of domestic producers Cofco Biochemical (Anhui) Co., Jilin Fuel Alcohol Co., Meihekou Fukang Alcohol Co. and Jilin New Tianlong Wine Industry Co.
