AFIA adds two more FSMA regional seminars to series
The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) announced registration is open for two additional Food Safety Modernization Act Regional Seminars: "Phase 1: Building a Foundation for Compliance." The meetings will be hosted in Des Moines, Iowa, and Atlanta on Aug. 11-12 and Aug. 14-15, respectively.

Purina Animal Nutrition recalls some poultry feeds
The Purina Animal Nutrition LLC feed plant in Portland, Ore., has initiated a limited recall of certain poultry feeds due to the potential for lower-than-expected vitamin and trace mineral levels. The products were distributed to retailers in Oregon and Washington.

Groups request FSMA revision regarding brewers grain
The Beer Institute and the American Malting BarleyAssociation have filed joint comments to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA) in an effort to protect the practice of brewers marketing their brewers’grain to local animal producers.The Beer Institute has been working with members ofCongress, regulators and organizations to present an economic and scientificargument that it is unnecessary for the FDA to add more regulation to brewers’spent grain and other brewing by-products.

HKScan Group commits to the use of responsibly produced soy
Finland-based meat and poultry producer HKScan hasbecome a member of the Round Table on Responsible Soy Association (RTRS) and therebycommitted itself to continuously promoting greater ethical responsibility inthe supply chain of soy used in animal feed. HKScan will ensure that by the endof 2018, all soy used in its entire meat value chain will meet the strictrequirements of the RTRS.

Additive decreases the energy costs of feed production
As energy costs continue to rise, researchers at Tecaliman, the Nantes, France-based feed technical center, have been experimenting with an acidifying additive that has potential to decrease feed mill energy bills. This method allows feed plants to lower its heat treatment temperature while improving its enterobacteria-fighting efficiency.
