Will Europe change its aquafeed protein after EU feather meal decision?
Poultry groups will be watching with interest how feed businesses in Europe respond to the European Union’s decision that feather meal can be used in feeds for fish. Until now, a ban on using any type of so-called processed animal protein has been in place since 2000, triggered by the “Mad Cow Disease” crisis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy that was deemed to be transmissible through in-feed materials of animal origin.

Margins influence animal feed ingredient crop planting
Animal feed ingredient price rises since 2008 have made all parts of animal agribusiness much more aware than before about the comparative economics of growing the different crops in the main supply countries. European organic animal feed manufacturers face new regulations in 2012
European manufacturers of organic feeds for poultry already occupy a rather small niche market, but they fear it may not exist at all starting in 2012, unless the European Union regulators come to their rescue. The legal background to this problem was spelled out by Commission Regulation number 889/2008, which set detailed rules for implementing previous Regulation 834/2007 about organic production in European Union countries. The ruling made plain that a small percentage of non-organic ingredients would be permitted in organic animal feeds until 31 December 2011.

The FDA released its proposed amendments to the VFD regulation, which aims to phase out the use of antibiotics for production purposes. Luckily, for well-managed animal production operations, the shift of medically important antibiotics from over-the-counter availability to VFD status, which requires veterinary oversight, should not have much impact on business. Time to review feed formulas
In my years as a commercial nutritionist, I had made it a habit to review all my product formulas twice a year. Now that I work for myself, and I produce my own piglet feeds, I kept this routine and I use the slow time of December (and again in June) to review my formulas.
