The Student Innovation Challenge hosted by Egg Farmers of Canada is an exciting initiative that encourages post-secondary students from across Canada to pitch their innovative research ideas that could shape the future of Canada's egg industry. The challenge invites students to submit a video showcasing their research and how it could bring fresh, innovative solutions to the sector.
In 2025, several students participated, presenting creative ideas that address current challenges faced by egg farmers. These innovations ranged from using artificial intelligence to understand animal behavior to exploring new dietary approaches for hens and improving animal health practices.
The winners were:
-
Jo Ann Chew from the University of Alberta (first place)
-
Venkatraman Manikandan from Dalhousie University (second place)
-
Janan Shoja Doost from the University of Guelph (third place)
These winners were selected by a jury of industry experts and academics at a meeting held on March 19, 2025.
This initiative is part of a broader research program by Egg Farmers of Canada, which includes various grants, research chairs and partnerships designed to continue advancing the egg sector.
