Developed in collaboration with the USDA Agricultural Research Service, this BAX System features real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology for E. coli detection. The test can be used to detect pathogens or other organisms in raw ingredients, finished products and environmental samples, according to the company. In May 2011 BAX was approved for use by Canadian beef processors.
