While most of the products harvested from chickens and turkeys are consumed by humans, a substantial volume of each bird harvested is classified as byproducts. Although these byproducts are not used in the human food supply chain, they are not wasted. Instead, they undergo a process called rendering to upcycle them into other valuable products.
End products produced by poultry rendering companies include feather meal, poultry by-product meal and poultry fat. Plants producing these materials are required to follow strict safety guidelines to be in compliance with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) regulation under the Food Modernization and Safety Act (FMSA).
