Sustainability has become a critical focus for the animal agriculture industry, as the demand for protein continues to rise. To address this challenge, the annual Animal Agriculture Sustainability Summit is organized as part of the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE). This summit, sponsored by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association (USPOULTRY), the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), and the Meat Institute, brings together industry leaders and experts to discuss the latest developments in sustainable protein production.

The Animal Agriculture Sustainability Summit kicks off with a keynote address by Dr. Frank Mitloehner, a renowned professor and air quality specialist from the University of California-Davis. Dr. Mitloehner, who is also the director of the Clarity and Leadership for Environmental Awareness and Research (CLEAR) Center, will provide valuable insights into the intersection of sustainability and animal agriculture. His expertise in the field makes him the perfect speaker to set the tone for the summit.

Updates on industry programs and tools

Following Dr. Mitloehner's address, representatives from the meat, poultry, egg, and animal feed industries will share updates on industry programs and tools aimed at advancing sustainable protein production. These updates will showcase the ongoing efforts to address environmental challenges while meeting the growing global demand for protein. The speakers for this portion of the program include:

Ryan Bennett, the executive director of the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Poultry & Eggs, will highlight the initiatives undertaken by the organization to promote sustainability in the poultry and egg industry. This includes efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve water resources, and improve animal welfare practices.

Laura Moody, P.E., the executive director of the Institute for Feed Education & Research and the American Feed Industry Association, will share updates on the latest research and educational programs focused on sustainable feed production. These initiatives aim to develop innovative feed ingredients, improve feed efficiency, and minimize the environmental impact of feed production.

Eric Mittenthal, the chief strategy officer of The Protein PACT, will discuss the organization's strategic approach to driving sustainable practices in the meat industry. Through collaboration and innovation, The Protein PACT aims to address key sustainability challenges, including greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and waste reduction.

Dr. Heather Fowler, the director of producer and public health at The Pork Board, will provide insights into the pork industry's efforts to enhance sustainability. This includes advancements in pig farming practices, resource management, and the development of technologies to reduce environmental impact.

Q&A Session and Family Farm Environmental Excellence Awards

At the conclusion of the presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session with the speakers. This interactive session allows participants to delve deeper into the topics discussed and gain a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities in sustainable protein production.

Additionally, the Animal Agriculture Sustainability Summit will feature a ceremony announcing the winners of the USPOULTRY's Family Farm Environmental Excellence Awards for 2024. These awards recognize outstanding family farmers who have demonstrated exceptional environmental stewardship in their operations. It is a testament to the industry's commitment to sustainability and recognizing those who lead by example.

The Animal Agriculture Sustainability Summit is a part of the larger International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE), which spans from January 30th to February 1st. IPPE is a collaboration of three trade shows: the International Feed Expo, International Poultry Expo, and International Meat Expo. This comprehensive event brings together the entire chain of protein production and processing, offering valuable networking opportunities and access to cutting-edge technologies and solutions.
