Former Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Joshua Svaty is running for governor of the state.

Former Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Joshua Svaty is running for governor of the state.

Svaty, 37, served in the Kansas House of Representatives from 2002 to 2009, when Mark Parkinson, who was the Kansas governor at the time, appointed him to fill the vacant agriculture secretary’s position.  

Svaty’s predecessor, Adrian Polansky, resigned as agriculture secretary to become the executive director of the Kansas Farm Service Agency under the Obama administration.

Sam Brownback is the current governor of Kansas, but he cannot seek re-election because of term limit laws. Brownback is also a former Kansas secretary of agriculture.

Svaty, Parkinson and Polansky are all Democrats. Brownback is a Republican.

Former Kansas Agriculture Secretary Svaty Announces Bid For Governor

A former Kansas legislator who also served as the state agriculture secretary and as a senior official in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is running for governor. Joshua Svaty, 37, launched his bid for the Democratic nomination Tuesday at the Ellsworth Co-op, just a few miles from the farm where he grew up.

Democrat Svaty declares candidacy for Kansas governor

Ellsworth County farmer Joshua Svaty revealed plans Tuesday to seek the Democratic nomination for Kansas governor in a political contest viewed by the former state legislator as a referendum on leadership of Republican Gov. Sam Brownback. Svaty made the announcement from an Ellsworth Co-op Elevator dock in the tiny central Kansas town of Black Wolf, and made clear his central campaign message would be restoring stability in Kansas government.
