Climate change poses significant challenges to the swine industry, affecting feed availability, nutrient requirements and environmental conditions for pig production. Nevertheless, as we confront these challenges, there is a growing need to adapt swine nutrition strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change while maintaining productivity, profitability, and sustainability in swine production systems worldwide.
One of the key challenges posed by climate change is the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events, such as heatwaves and droughts, which can disrupt feed production and quality. In response, producers must implement strategies to enhance resilience and mitigate the effects of heat stress on swine performance and welfare. This may include adjusting feeding regimens, providing access to shade and cooling systems, and formulating diets with ingredients that promote heat tolerance and hydration in pigs.
