The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has announced itsmembership in the newly formed Coalition for Safe Affordable Food (CFSAF), joininga national effort to urge Congress to quickly seek a federal solution and establishstandards for the safety and labeling of animal feed, pet food and human food andbeverage products made with genetically modified ingredients.“AFIA firmly believes there should be a federal GMO labelingsolution protecting consumers by ensuring the safety of both food and feed ingredientsproduced through the use of modern agricultural biotechnology,” said Leah Wilkinson,AFIA director of ingredients, pet food and state affairs.

The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) submitted extensivestatements recently to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in response totwo proposed rules issued to implement provisions of the Food Safety ModernizationAct (FSMA).The first FDA proposal would require importers to verify thesafety of foreign foods and feed/feed ingredients imported and intended for usein the United States, while the second would establish criteria under which theagency would recognize and accredit third-party auditors that perform safety auditsfor such products.

The Specialty Feed Ingredients Sustainability (SFIS) ProjectConsortium, dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of livestockproduction through innovative specialty feed ingredients, has announced theresults of a yearlong study that confirms the role of Specialty FeedIngredients (SFIs) in reducing the environmental impact of livestockproduction.Launched by the International Feed Industry Federation(IFIF) and the E.U. Association of Specialty Feed Ingredients and theirMixtures (FEFANA) in 2013, the overall results of the study show that the useof SFIs in animal diets reduces the consumption of basic feed ingredients.
