Annual feed convention to highlight ag policy, food/feed safety
The chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, top executives from the grain and rail industries, and the Food and Drug Administration’s top food and feed safety official will headline the program when the National Grain and Feed Association kicks off its 116th annual convention on March 18–20 in Charleston, S.C. During the three-day event, industry leaders also will focus on the aftermath of the MF Global Inc. bankruptcy, including initial policy recommendations from the National Grain and Feed Association’s MF Global Task Force on ways to enhance protection of customer funds.

ExtruAfrica 2012 to address extrusion as food, feed processing instrument
ExtruAfrica 2012, an international conference and practical training seminar on extrusion technology applied in food and feed manufacturing, will focus on the topic "a global perspective on food and feed extrusion for Africa." The event, which will be presented by the Centre of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing of the North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus at the Protea Hotel Kruger Gate in Mpumalanga, South Africa from July 31 to August 3, will include a two-day practical training seminar on food, feed and pet food extrusion and a two-day international conference on food and feed extrusion.

Nutreco increases shareholding in Brazilian joint venture Fri-Ribe
Nutreco has signed an agreement to increase its shareholding in its Brazilian joint venture Nutreco Fri-Ribe from 51 percent to 97 percent, according to reports. Nutreco Fri-Ribe supplies premix and feed specialties products for poultry, swine, ruminant and aquaculture species.

Environmental Protection Agency revises feed mill emission standards
The Environmental Protection Agency issued a direct final rule on Dec. 23, 2011 to revise certain provisions of the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Prepared Feed Manufacturing. The direct final rule, which became effective Feb. 21, revises an earlier rule the agency finalized in 2010 that requires general housekeeping practices and sets efficiency standards for cyclones that operate on pellet mills.

Viterra divests North American feed operations
Viterra Inc. has entered into an agreement with the newly formed Hi-Pro Feeds LP to divest its North American livestock feed operations, according to reports, including six feed mills and one pre-mix manufacturing facility in Canada, and six feed mills and one commodity blending site in the U.S. Hi-Pro is owned by the existing management team and Birch Hill Equity Partners.

CHS, Consumer Supply Distributing form livestock feed company
Producer-owned cooperative CHS Inc. and Iowa-based Consumers Supply Distributing Co. are forming a livestock and pet food manufacturing and wholesale distribution company, Consumers Supply Distributing LLC. The Iowa-based company will offer the CHS Payback livestock and Equis horse feed brands, along with the range of livestock and companion animal products currently carried by Consumers Supply Distributing.

Blue Level Technologies's VHS rod point level sensor is an extension unit that has an AC/DC universal power supply, low density detection capability to as lightweight as 3.12 pounds per cubic foot, and all stainless steel wetted part construction. It uses piezoelectric technology to create harmonic vibrations in the absence of material, and is dampened when material is present using sensor relays.

China to destroy 6.7 metric tons ractopamine-fed US beef
The Taipei City government's Department of Environmental Protection will burn 6.771 metric tons of U.S. beef containing the feed additive ractopamine to ensure that the contaminated meat does not reach Chinese consumers, according to reports. The beef, confiscated from Taipei-based beef importer Shusen Corp., is the first batch of U.S. beef containing the banned feed additive to be destroyed in wake of recent inspections.

These technologies are quite exciting, allowing for faster processing, higher levels of efficiency and extraordinary capacity for data collection. The ability to do anything more quickly and efficiently is something to be celebrated, and that should be our approach to new feed technologies - even if it does cause a temporary sense of information overload.

Foreign pigeon pea crop may have US applications
The pigeon pea, a subtropical, drought-resistant legume grown worldwide as a food staple, may have multiple U.S. applications, according to researchers at Texas A&M University, who received a $200,000 Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education grant to study the crop. Possible uses include as a forage for livestock, a garden crop, or edible landscape ornamental.
