Illinois soy, corn yields better than expected
Soybean harvests for some farmers in Illinois are averaging about 10 bushels per acre above 2010 numbers, in spite of an unpredictable season that included heavy spring rains and average July temperatures that broke record highs. Some corn harvests are also reaching averages slightly above 2010 in spite of dealing with the same conditions.

UK animal feed manufacturer acquires blended feeds business
UK animal feed manufacturer HJ Lea Oakes has purchased Staffordshire-based A&F Williamson, using the acquisition to expand its blended feeds business. Production will continue at A&F's Endon site before being transferred to a new purpose-built factory at Prees Heath in Shropshire, according to HJ Lea Oakes.

Europe feed equipment manufacturer acquires feed mill dealer
Europe animal feed machinery and equipment producer Skiold A/S has acquired 50% of Australia's Vacuum and Milling Solutions. Since 2008, VMS has sold and supplied feed mills and ancillary equipment from Skiold to farmers and stockfeed industries in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and the Pacific Islands.

China company invests in animal feed in Vietnam
Chinese company Sichuan Tequ Group has invested $10 million in a Vietnam feed mill in the country's northern Bac Giang Province. The venture is expected to bring advanced feed production technology and management experience to Vietnam, and further enhance agricultural cooperation between the two countries, according to Hoang Kim Giao, director of the Livestock Breeding Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

England wheat production down, but better than predicted
England's wheat harvest has not been as bad as first feared, despite the extremely dry weather, according to results of an NFU members’ survey. Preliminary results from the NFU’s 2011 harvest survey have revealed yields are below average despite a cropping area up around 3% to 1.822 million hectares.

Kansas State offers basic, advanced feed manufacturing courses
Kansas State University’s International Grains Program will be hosting Basic and Advanced Feed Manufacturing courses Sept. 26 through Oct. 7, 2011. The courses are geared toward feed mill owners, managers, supervisors, merchandisers and maintenance personnel as well as managers of livestock, poultry and agriculture facilities.

JBS United, DeKalb Feeds partner on feed manufacturing
JBS United and DeKalb Feeds have entered into a joint venture, Central Nutrition Services LLC, focusing on manufacturing livestock feeds and nutritional supplements for both JBS and DeKalb and their customers throughout the Midwest. The venture takes advantage of an existing Frytown, Iowa, mill facility which DeKalb acquired in September 1996, and which has never been fully utilized.

First Chinese animal feed mill built in Cambodia
The first Chinese animal feed mill has been built in Cambodia, a joint effort between China's New Hope Group and Japan's animal feed Sojitz Corporation. The Sichuan New Hope Agribusiness (Cambodia) will be able to produce roughly 57,000 tons of animal feed per year, adding to the country's current production capabilities of 170,000 tons per year.

ADM closes soy processing plant in Illinois
Archer Daniels Midland Co. has closed its soybean processing plant in Galesburg, Ill., due to low profits and slow demand, according to the company. "Several factors — including the growing soybean export market, the increasing cost of beans and a decrease in domestic demand for soybean meal — put severe pressure on the profitability of the Galesburg plant and drove the decision to close the facility," said Roman Blahoski, ADM spokesman.

Syngenta sues grain supplier over GMO corn rejection
Syngenta Seeds has filed suit against the North American grain operations of Bunge for refusing to accept a genetically modified type of Syngenta's corn designed to protect the crop against insect damage. Syngenta said Bunge has singled out its corn, stating elevators cannot accept the grain because they don't have necessary international approval from major export destinations.
