If one were following Feed International’s “Top Feed Companies” article over the last few years, they would be hard-pressed not to notice that of the 60+ companies tracked, one is moving quickly up the list – ForFarmers. Ranked at #31 in size by million metric tons of complete feeds in 2010, the feed producer jumped to number 12 in the rankings for 2012, and appears to be ready to move up the list again, possibly even breaking into the top five companies globally by 2016.

European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation releases environmental report
The European Feed Manufacturers' Federation has released the second edition of its environmental report, expanding upon the initial overview of the environmental benefits and burdens that result from activities under the direct control of the EU compound feed industry, outlined in its 2009 report. “The European compound feed industry has to focus on the further increase of resource efficiency and its contribution to safe and healthy feed and food," said Ruud Tijssens, chairman of the federation's task force.

Feed mill manufacturers have grown used to worrying about whether rail cars will be available to bring feed ingredients to the mill and if trucks leaving the mill are legally loaded. Those headaches aren’t likely to disappear in 2012, but mill managers may find themselves trying to sort out a new logistics problem resulting from a new federal law that – at first glance – doesn’t seem to have much to do with feed.

A shortage of raw materials in Vietnam has led to domestic animal feed manufacturers depending on imports for up to 70% of their materials, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Vietnam businesses depend mainly on the U.S., India and Argentina for the imports of raw materials used to produce the country's animal feed.

UK animal feed manufacturer acquires blended feeds business
UK animal feed manufacturer HJ Lea Oakes has purchased Staffordshire-based A&F Williamson, using the acquisition to expand its blended feeds business. Production will continue at A&F's Endon site before being transferred to a new purpose-built factory at Prees Heath in Shropshire, according to HJ Lea Oakes.

Archer Daniels Midland Company has announced the acquisition of English River Pellets Inc., an Iowa-based grain elevator and animal feed manufacturing business. The animal feed portion of English River Pellets’ business will be operated by ADM Alliance Nutrition Inc.

GMP+ International issued Country Note BCN-NL1 Antibiotics-free feed for certification bodies. The Country Note contains conditions for the production of antibiotics-free animal feed as a supplementary (non-mandatory) certificate for all animal feed manufacturers that are already certified for GMP+ within the animal feed production scope, according to GMP+.
