Darling International sees second quarter net income growth
Darling International Inc., which makes protein meals that can be used as nutritional additives for the animal feed industry, reported a net income of $52.2 million for the second quarter of 2011 ended July 2, up from $11.4 million in 2010. For the same period in 2011, the company reported net sales of $470.6 million as compared to $166.2 million for the second quarter of 2010.

US ethanol producer uses wheat to battle corn shortage
U.S. ethanol producer The Andersons Inc. is mixing wheat into its corn-based biofuel in an effort to cut costs and diversify its supplier sources while fighting an increasing shortage in corn supplies. Andersons is mixing soft red winter wheat along with corn to produce the biofuel, according to Neill McKinstray, vice president and general manager of the company's ethanol division.

Adisseo animal nutrition to make initial public offering in Hong Kong, Paris
Bluestar Adisseo, an animal nutrition company and one of the largest producers of the poultry protein methionine, aims to raise around $1.5 billion in a Hong Kong-Paris dual initial public offering listing, according to reports. Adisseo plans to list itself on the markets in Hong Kong and Paris in September, with hopes of attracting European investors, reports say.

Danisco research highlights benefit of E. coli phytase in animal nutrition
Danisco Animal Nutrition announced new research in understanding the antinutrient effect of phytate in animal nutrition, which can reduce feed costs for pig and poultry producers. The research from Danisco is published in the Analytical Biochemistry journal.

UK animal feed, pet food contributing to deforestation, says study
More than 10% of all palm kernel meal, a byproduct of palm oil, produced in the world is fed to British animals as feed or petfood, a statistic that may be contributing to deforestation, according to experts. The plantations on which most of the world’s oil palm is grown have resulted in an 85% loss of biodiversity, according to a study done for the Department of Food and Rural Affairs.

FDA targets imported food containing illegal, undeclared colors
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration added 87 firms to its Import Alert 45-02, which focuses on foods containing illegal or undeclared colors, in the first four months of 2011. The alert, "Detention without Physical Examination and Guidance of Foods Containing Illegal and/or Undeclared Colors," may present problems for many foreign food manufacturers, according to Benjamin England, owner of FDAImports.com LLC.

EU drafts legislation to allow processed animal protein in animal feed
Draft legislation amending the regulations for processed animal protein to allow it in animal feed has been published by the European Commission, according to the European Fat Processors and Renderers Association. “The legislation will restrict the use of processed animal proteins to feed for omnivores and carnivores including pig, poultry and farmed fish," said Niels Leth Nielsen, EFPRA president.

US feed industry urges FDA to continue regulatory discretion for ingredients
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration should continue to exercise regulatory discretion to maintain the continued availability of a number of unapproved animal drug products, said the National Grain and Feed Association in a statement to the FDA. The types of animal feed and pet food products currently regulated by the FDA that could fall within the category of “unapproved animal drugs” include products formulated from animal feed ingredients that help manage, from a dietary and nutritional standpoint, a specific disease or condition under a licensed veterinarian’s professional supervision, said the NGFA.

BioResource International to build feed manufacturing facility in China
BioResource International
North Carolina-based BioResource International Inc. has announced that it signed a formal agreement to construct a feed manufacturing facility in China. BRI partnered with Taiwan-based Yung Zip Chemical Industrial Co. Ltd. and Yung Shin Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. to purchase land and begin construction on the plant, which will be used to produce BRI’s natural feed additives for chicken and pig nutrition.

Sandalwood in animal feed may reduce E. coli, listeria growth
Adding sandalwood (or a sandalwood analog) to animal feed may reduce the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli and listeria in the rumen, according to a research team led by Professor Jamie Newbold from the United Kingdom's Aberystwyth University, in conjunction with the Compton Group. Trials in a rumen simulating fermenter (Rusitec) confirmed that Javanol, a sandalwood analog, reduced methane production by up to 25%.
