IFFO supports Europe ban on healthy fish discards
IFFO The Marine Ingredients Organisation has claimed its support for the European Parliament's vote to ban discards of healthy fish, saying that the raw materials can instead be used to supply the needs of the fishmeal and fish oil industries. "The supply of fishmeal and fish oil is not meeting current demand," said Andrew Mallison, director general of IFFO.

Russia imposing temporary ban on U.S. turkey
Russia will soon ban imports of U.S. turkey because of concerns about the use of the feed additive ractopamine, according to the country's Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Inspection Service. The ban includes U.S. turkey meat, as well as finished products containing turkey meat. The service will impose a temporary ban, effective February 11.

The FIAAP Asia 2014 exhibition was only launched shortly before Christmas; however, already a number of large international feed ingredient and additive suppliers have signed up for the show, with a number of other new companies expressing interest in exhibiting. When asked why they were signing up so early, many of the companies that market feed ingredients and additives throughout South and South East Asia said they visited the 2012 show to assess the event and the state of the market.

Exhibitors for VICTAM Asia 2014 haven't been able to reserve their stand space for very long, but the event is already over a quarter full, according to organizers. Many of the large international exhibitors at VICTAM Asia have already confirmed their participation in the 2014 show in what are signs of their continuing and increasing commitment to the South and South East Asian markets and the success of the exhibition and its supporting conferences.

Increased energy content in feed may cut beef grading losses
Under-finished animals are causing beef farmers to lose up to £51 per beast due to poor forage quality, but this could be rectified by increasing the energy content of the diet, according to Martin Smith of Ufac-UK. “The latest report from Northern Ireland’s Livestock and Meat Commission shows a continuing trend for carcasses to be under-finished — with a six percent reduction in steers classified in fat classes 4 and 5 with a six percent increase in classes 1 and 2,” said Smith.

Ractopamine safe for use in Brazil pork
Animal scientists in Brazil have found that a small dose of the feed additive ractopamine can boost pork production without changing how pork looks or tastes. In the latest issue of the Journal of Animal Science, researchers said that a 5 mg/kg dose of ractopamine increased muscle mass and feed efficiency, and had no noticeable effect on pork marbling, fat content, toughness or color.

Novus Mintrex trace minerals may improve dairy cow immune response
A recent University of Delaware study of early lactation dairy cows revealed improved immune response when treated with Novus International Inc.'s Mintrex chelated trace minerals. Cows fed Mintrex were able to generate an elevated antibody response to a pathogen, which better enabled them to fight infection, according to the study, which was published in the August edition of Journal of Dairy Science.
