While industrial-scale insect manufacturing is a relatively new concept, it utilizes many of the same principles as processing other common feedstocks into food or feed. It involves raw material storage and handling equipment, drying, pelleting and packaging processes, as well as facility automation controls.

There are also nuances to rearing and processing insects for protein that aren’t common to feed manufacturing and grain processing facilities, such as insect inactivation and wet separation technology.
