The high price of inorganic phosphorus is putting pressure on the monogastric industry, driving up the cost of feed production and affecting profit margins.

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for the growth, development and bone mineralization of pigs and poultry — with agriculture accounting for 80% to 90% of global demand. However, it is a depleting resource with volatile prices for inorganic sources, averaging EUR500 (US$544 to EUR1,550 (US$1,688) per ton since 2021, making it difficult to forecast costs.
