Is H5N1 indemnity program for dairy farmers needed?

It would make a difference if cows’ reduced milk production is temporary or permanent after an infection, agriculture secretary says.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) does not have an established a program that offers indemnity payments to dairy producers whose cattle have been infected by the H5N1 virus.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack wants to hear from the farmers to see is such a program is needed.
