As authorities in Sri Lanka investigate the source of the African swine fever (ASF) outbreak that hit the South Asian nation in October, it has been proposed that the entire pig population could be eliminated, and production restarted with virus-free imported animals.

Confirming its first ever ASF cases in October 2024, Sri Lanka became the 20th Asian country to be affected by the disease since 2018.
