Since the African swine fever (ASF) virus was first detected in the south Asian state in October, it has spread rapidly to affect more than 130 pig herds across Sri Lanka.

In October 2024, the Indian Ocean island state of Sri Lanka confirmed its first cases of African swine fever (ASF).

An initial notification early the next month recorded outbreaks on three farms on the west coast, near to the capital city of Colombo.
